About Ergonomics
Ergonomics (slang - ergo) is a term used by people in the health profession as well as marketers a lot these days. For some it means something very specific. For others it covers everything under the sun. With all these technical words being used, you are probably starting to wonder, "What is Ergonomics?"
Ergonomics is derived from two seperate Greek words: ergon, meaning work, and nomoi, meaning natural laws, to create a word that means the science of work and a person's relationship to that work. (from About.com)
A well designed and adjusted ergonomic office chair is the basic ingredient for a productive and safe workstation. A quality "ergo office chair" provides the necessary support for the back, buttocks, arms, and legs, while reducing contact stress, and unnecessary exertions. More adjustability options means a better fit for you, the user, and provides support in various sitting positions throughout the day. This is even more important if the chair has more than one user.
Why does Bodybilt have so many chair options? Instead of just making one ergonomic shaped chair with several adjustments we custom build each chair piece by piece for each person based on several criteria: Your body size; your daily routine, specific pain areas you may have; material and color choices and more.
Green ErgonomicsErgoGenesis LLC, manufacturer of the BodyBilt ergonomic chair, has qualified for "Green" certification for the BodyBilt line of ergonomic chairs from the national testing firm Materials Analytical Services. As part of the Green certification process, BodyBilt ergonomic chairs were tested and found to meet the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association (BIFMA) X7.1 performance standard (www.bifma.com).
ErgoGenesis was the first ergonomic chair manufacturer to use soy-based BioFoam (www.bioh.com), and given the positive results, every BodyBilt ergonomic office chair is now made with soy-based BioFoam. This helps to reduce the amount of petroleum products used to build every BodyBilt ergonomic chair."
Why you need an ergonomic chair
Some people are tall, some are short. There are many reasons for needing an ergonomic chair. But think about this. Our bodies were not designed to sit in a chair all day. It has only been in the last 60 years that we have had "offices" where people go each day to sit at a desk and perform a job. The invention of the computer and the internet has made us even more "tied to our desks", as the modern worker is expected to spend at least 6, or more hours per day at their desk.
What we all could use is an ergonomic chair. When you sit in a chair, more often than not your chair does not conform to you, but your body is "forced" to conform to the chair. Most chairs that you buy, and even some that call themselves "ergonomic chairs" are not adjustable - your body must adapt to the chair, which it will try to do, which is what causes you pain.
Picture your back. Your back has an "S" in it. It curves out at the head, in at the neck, out in the back of the rib cage, and the in at the lower back and out again at your lower backside. There are curves. Now look at the chair you are sitting in, does it have curves to fit the shape of your back? If you answer "no" to this question, that is not a surprise as most chairs do not properly fit your back. Most chairs have a flat back, and because your back is not flat, you will slouch and eventually, hour after hour after sitting in the wrong posture, experience lower and upper back pain.
